Heron Cubs Tonight (6th Feb)

New Scout Troop - Lynx

100 Scouting Years

3rd Ware were formed at the early part of the 20th Century when Scouting was very new and a rapidly growing organisation. From these early beginnings we have constantly been a dynamic and active Group within the town and District, adding Cub and Beaver sections to supplement the Scout Troop to make the 5 sections and some 120 young people aged 6-14 that currently enjoy all that we offer.

We want to mark our centenary in a number of ways throughout 2011, providing a number of activities and events that are applicable from time to time for differing age groups from our youngest Beavers to our oldest past members.

Our Mascot "Augustus Clibbon" has his own Blog to keep you informed of what is happening throughout the year: -

Cubs and Beavers

The St George's Day Service at Christ Church, Ware, will start promptly at 3:00pm. You need to be seated by 2:45pm and so need to aim to arrive outside the church by 2:40pm at the latest. There will be a collection for a local charity taken during the service.

After the services we will form up in the Christ Church School playground, to parade down the High Street to the Priory where we will all renew our promises.

Finish time at the Priory is expected to be around 4:30pm.

Scouts

The format for this year sees a change from past years for the Scout Troop. Scouts should arrive at Christ Church School via the Bowling Road entrance at 12 noon. Please wear activity clothes but bring full uniform (in a named bag or coat hanger) to change into plus a snack and a drink.

A variety of community and environmental tasks will then be undertaken for a couple of hours before the Scouts return to Christ Church School, change, have a short celebration (with collection for a local charity) and parade to the Priory as in past years with the Beavers and Cubs.

Tesco and Sainsbury's Vouchers

3rd Ware Scout Group is once again collecting Tesco and Sainsbury’s vouchers.

Please place all Tesco Vouchers and Sainsbury Active Kid Vouchers in the box by Friday 18th June.

Vouchers placed in the box after this date will not be able to be used.

These will enable us to provide extra resources for the young people at no extra cost to the Group or yourselves. Many thanks

Akela on his bike again

Oh no! Jeremy the Akela of Heron Pack is at it again.

Following on from the London to Cambridge ride last year, this time he is attempting to cycle from London to Brighton in aid of the British Heart Foundation on Sunday 21st June.

Let's just hope he doesn't eat too much bacon at Camp on Saturday Morning.

Latest news is that Jeremy completed the ride in 8 hours (although some of that time was spent mending punctures and stuck in traffic)

Bear Grylls announced as new Chief Scout

Bear Grylls will be the new Chief Scout of the UK Scout Association. The famous adventurer takes over when current Chief Scout, former Blue Peter presenter Peter Duncan, completes his five year tenure in July.

When asked why he chose to volunteer for the UK’s largest mixed youth movement, Bear said: ‘In short, because I love adventure and I love hanging out with good friends. For me this is what Scouting is about.’

Born on 7 June 1974, Bear Grylls will be the youngest ever Chief Scout.

He first got involved in Scouting aged eight as a Cub Scout. Bear attributes this time as part of the inspiration behind his adult adventures presenting TV shows such as Born Survivor: ‘So much of who we are as an adult is formed when we are kids,’ said Bear. ‘What Scouting says to people is: “it’s okay to go for it in life”.

‘Every child has a right to have an adventure. Life is about grabbing opportunities. The prizes don’t always go to the biggest, the best and the strongest – they go to those who persevere. These are simple life lessons that Scouting teaches people.’

The Chief Scout provides inspiration for the 100,000 adult volunteers involved in Scouting across the UK.

The position was created in 1920 with the appointment of Robert Baden-Powell, who founded the Scout Movement in 1908.

Working together for Scouting

Working in partnership with Bear will be Scouting volunteer Wayne Bulpitt, who takes on the new role of UK Chief Commissioner. Wayne will focus on providing leadership to all volunteers within Scouting. Like Bear, Wayne’s Scouting began when he joined as a Cub Scout.

‘I am delighted to have been invited to take on this position at such an exciting time,’ said Wayne. ‘The successes of the last few years mean that we are well placed to make the most of a high public profile and fulfil our vision of providing personal development and exciting opportunities to increasing numbers of young people.’

Providing adventure to the UK’s young people

Bear and Wayne join 100,000 Scout volunteers who give up their time to provide adventurous activities to 400,000 6-25 year olds.

Watford Football - Postponed to Saturday 28th February

Notice for those signed up for the postponed official Scouting day visit to see Watford. The event has been re-scheduled for Saturday 28th February and they will be playing against Crystal Palace. The coach leaves 12:15 pm from Broadmeads, but anybody wishing to leave later may make their own way there. There may be some tickets left - please ask your leaders if you are interested in a last minute booking.

Recent Competitions Keeping Us Busy

Well done to the 3 Scout Patrols who took part in this month's Nocturnal Challenge. We achieved very commendable 2nd and 3rd places in the Scout results against strong competition.

25 Cubs represented 3rd Ware at the District Tug of War and Sports day competitions this month. We achieved 3rd place in the Tug of War and managed to retain the Perowne Cup for the team relay event.

A great effort by all our Beavers at the District Tug of War, with the Lea Beavers coming a valiant 2nd place.

3 Scout patrols entered this year's Heavyweight competition. One patrol achieved second place in the Scout competition.

A big well done to our Cubs who entered the Oxley Shield competition – 12 great Young people who did us all proud. A special well done to the Falcon Six who retained the Trophy for the second year running.

Akela's Marathon Cycle Ride

Twinning with Gambian Scouts in Africa

3rd Ware are proud to be twinned with the Medina Sering Mass Scout Group in the Gambia, thanks to the efforts of the Hertforshire based charity HELPING.

In addition to writing and receiving letters, as part of the International Friendship Award, each member of 3rd Ware was recently challenged to raise £5. Many thanks to everyone who accepted the challenge. We raised a very respectable £470.18. The money raised has been used to send much needed sports equipment, scarves and woggles to the West African Group. If you have missed the deadline, it's not too late to hand in any outstanding money since it can still be used to provide further equipment or uniforms for the Gambian Scouts.
